EveScape Shuttle

Description

EveScape Shuttle was a collaborative project with three 'Games Design' students. The project was to create a game inspired by escape rooms, with permission to use the 'EVE Online' (CCP Games, 2003) Intellectual Property. The player is a pilot of a shuttle which has been attacked by space pirates and is crashing, they must solve puzzles to attempt to fix the ship before it explodes. However, due to having no technical knowledge of repair, the player character must use 'Neural Boosters' to give themselves temporary intelligence boosts to assist.

Our intention with EveScape Shuttle was to make a product that did the 'EVE Online' I.P. justice with an emphasis on being an experience, and polished. We decided to explore aspects of the EVE franchise rarely seen. As pilots of shuttles are usually Non-Playable characters, we used one as our main character, Neural Boosters are a relatively small facet of the lore, yet we made them the core mechanic of our game. These design choices allowed us to explore the EVE franchise from a fresh perspective.

My Role/Contributions

Role

Designer/Assistant Developer

With EveScape Shuttle, I decided to take a break from a lead development role. And instead decided to take a more design focused approach than usual, whilst being able to help in development if needed.

I helped design and refine the game concept as a whole, with emphasis on the following:

  • Level Design and Ship Layout

  • Neural Booster Mechanic

  • Medical Bay

  • Programming Puzzle

  • Power Generator Puzzle

Though these were the main areas of my design, I also helped in minor design of the other aspects of EveScape Shuttle.
